This is the original design that was accepted by The Trail of Painted Ponies entitled "One For All".
Here is One as she was when I first received her.
All sanded and primed. I've sketched in the general layout of the design and laid in the sky and clouds. Boy, I really like the intense blue of this sky. One of those colors that when ya look at it... it just makes you happy.
Here is the other side of One.
The mountains and sand have very basic sections colored in at this point. The mountains are still somewhat vague in structure.
Same stage as the previous picture. You may notice that the sky and the mountains are not exactly identical on the 2 sides. I felt this added a lil more interest and character to each side.
Same stage still, just a different angle. The colors are not set in stone yet and will change as she progresses.
One side of the mountains all finished.
... and side 2 of the mountains all finished.
One's herd on one side is almost done.
One's herd on the other side almost done. Again, the horses on this side are not identical to the ones on the other side.
I had a lot of fun painting One's horses. They turned out more stylized than I had planned, but I had a good time painting them in this style.
More details of horses.
And... even More details of horses.
With the addition of desert plants and some sand details... a lil bit of shading and....One is all finished. Now for that base...
Upclose of the other side of One.
Horses detail.
More horses... I have to say that these 2 are my favorite in the herd. I love their markings... so fun!
Ah.... the base looks more like a part of the whole design now. I've added actual sand and small rocks to the paint giving it the texture and look of the desert scene on One.
Side 2.
And the front view. I really enjoy how the painting flows from one section of the horse into another so fluidly that from some angles, you cannot really tell where one section ends and another begins.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing One progress from a drab grey into the brightly spirited mare she is now. I think she has some definate character and has developed a personality all her own. I greatly miss having One in my studio. One of those Works that an artist really hates to see go, but I am pleased to be able to share her with all of you! I have truely enjoyed participating in The Trail of Painted Ponies and wish them success along the Trail!
